How to Manage Overwhelm: Actionable Strategies For You
Spring has sprung, and although the weather is beautiful and flowers are blooming, most of us are overwhelmed. It has been an exciting rollercoaster of emotions for me as my oldest daughter Kira selected her college. Now we are at the final finish line with graduation and all the senior activities that take place as part of the celebration! The challenging part is that I still have never ending work responsibilities, spring cleaning, family demands and summer planning. And the list goes on and on! My clients and I have found three helpful strategies for when the tornado is at full speed and more balance is needed.
Strategy 1: Press the pause button and take 3 deep breaths. Stop, take a few mindful breaths and name how you are feeling. This could range from being totally overwhelmed, to anxiousness, to frustration. Just name it to yourself and let it be. You will be relieved and happy at the same time. Life sure can be filled with many feelings and noticing is part of the process.
Strategy 2: Get it out of your head. Write down what is stressing you or what you need to get done. There is a sense of stress release just from writing it down. Even though you may be overwhelmed, you are beginning to take control. You will notice an immediate difference!
Strategy 3: Take action! Ask yourself, what matters most? You may find that there is one thing that you can accomplish right away to make a difference for a family member or colleague. This accomplishment will give you the energy to steer you in the right direction for the next item that you want to accomplish. Small steps bring great results! Don’t forget to include you on your list. You need personal recharge during this busy time of the year. By taking care of yourself, you will develop the energy needed to accomplish tasks and manage stressors.
This is a wonderful, but busy time of the year. When you feel yourself getting pulled in multiple directions, take time to pause, breathe, and most importantly ask yourself, what matters most? Life will always be filled with an urgent to do list but focusing on making a difference will provide you with lasting memories! Don’t stay overwhelmed!
